Aruba's New Teleworker Solution

TMCnet Web Editor

More than 45 million Americans already enjoy the flexibility of working outside the office, and that number could increase with the announcement of Aruba Networks, a global leader in wireless LANs and unified mobility solutions, new Mobile Remote Access Point (News - Alert) (RAP) software. This new technology securely delivers the enterprise network to mobile users using a combination of WiFi and wireless broadband connectivity.

Targeted at organizations with highly mobile workers, temporary secure access needs, first responder or disaster recovery requirements, or tactical applications in which a WAN is not otherwise available, the Mobile RAP offers a truly instant-on, no set-up connectivity solution.  The right telework solution can help people perform their regular roles for their company, and be more prepared and responsive when the unexpected happens. Other benefits include the ability to share information seamlessly from remote locations and a range of devices; accessing information when it’s needed, from most anywhere; analyzing complex data clearly without coming in to the office, and gaining the flexibility to work from home.

The Mobile RAP is simple to use – just turn it on – yet provides similar functionality to a branch office VPN router but with lower IT operating costs. When loaded into a standard Aruba AP-70 Access Point, the Mobile RAP software delivers follow-me connectivity to mobile users everywhere they roam. Wide area connectivity is provided by a broadband wireless USB modem, including EV-DO and HSDPA, or Ethernet, or both for high-availability applications. The client interface is via the access point’s wired ports and wireless LAN.

Aruba’s follow-me security enforces policies regardless of how or where a user enters the enterprise network, and is ideal for protecting a mobile workforce. The Mobile RAP software provides role-based user access controls, a full stateful firewall, and split-tunnel routing.  Corporate policies are enforced by the Mobile RAP’s firewall, and if multiple users are present each will be managed consistent with established IT policies.

“Our objective is to securely deliver enterprise voice, video, and data applications to teleworkers and mobile users, and this completely wireless solution is a perfect connectivity tool”, said Aruba’s Mobile RAP product manager, Rajeev Shah.  “The access point is very compact and lightweight, and the broadband modem interface allows it to be used anywhere there is cellular coverage.  Once it has been initially configured by the IT staff there are no user adjustments or controls of any kind. The product could not be simpler to use - turn it on and you’re instantly connected to the enterprise over a secure, fire walled link.  And unlike VPNs, there are no clients to install or manage. The Mobile RAP is the ultimate user-friendly extension of an enterprise network for mobile users.”

The Mobile Remote Access Point software will be shipping early this summer.
